Positive Negative Knockout Effect in Illustrator

This tutorial is incredibly easy to follow! You can use it in a number of different ways (not just with text as the presenter shows.

  • Time to complete: 20 minutes
  • Tutorial Type: Video
    • Run Time: 8:32
  • Presenter: Easy to understand, but he has a bit of background noise.
  • Adjustments for Cloud: none!
  • What you need to know in order to do this tutorial: He doesn’t give you a size to start with. I made my page 400 x 200 pixels.
  • Tutorial corrections: none!
  • Ideas for creative license: You can always change the colors in your artwork, but also play around with using more shapes than he suggests in the video.

How to Create Interlocking Circles in Adobe Illustrator - Part 1

This is a two part series on how to make circles look like they are connected (like that of the Olympic rings). In the first tutorial, the presenter focuses on the interlocking of the shapes. In the second part (scroll down), she will walk you through how to make the shapes look like forms.

  • Tutorial Difficulty: 1/10 for part 1
  • Time to complete: 20 minutes for part 1
  • Tutorial Type: Video
    • Run Time: 4:42
  • Presenter: She has an accent, but she is easy to understand.
  • Adjustments for Cloud: none
  • What you need to know in order to do this tutorial: How to use the ellipse tool.
  • Tutorial corrections:
    • At 1:50, you may not want to make your circles with an 80 point stroke if your circles are smaller than hers. Choose a width that looks good for your circles.
    • At 2:30, you may want to make the offset of the stroke different than hers if your circles are not the same size as hers.
  • Ideas for creative license: try different colors!
